Post-mortem photography (also known as memorial portraiture or memento mori) was a photographty tradition that has recently died. Carlos Monsiváis (who passed away last year) affirms that even though today we would dream of taking the portrait of a deceased child, up until the 1930's it was a very important and common tradition.
What before meant showing your eternal love to your lost family member, in the form of a physical memory (a photograph), would nowadays be seen as a shameful thing, like acknowledging 'I couldn't take care of my family'.
La fotografía post-mortem (también conocida como retratos en memoria y memento mori), era una tradición fotográfica que murió hace poco. Carlos Monsiváis (quien falleció el año pasado), afirma que aunque en el presente no se nos ocurriría nunca tomarle una foto a un niño muerto, hasta la década de 1930 era una tradición muy común y muy importante.
Algo que antes significaba mostrar tu amor eterno a un miembro de la familia fallecido, en la forma de un recuerdo físico (una fotografía), hoy en día es visto como algo vergonzoso, es como aceptar abiertamente "no cuidé bien a mi familia".
The tradition consisted on dressing the deceased in their best clothes and create a beautiful and peaceful environment. A baby would appear in the arms of the parents for example, and the subject would always appear with their eyes closed.
La tradición consistía en vestir al muerto con sus mejores ropas y crear un ambiente hermoso y pacífico. Un bebe aparecería en los brazos de sus padres por ejemplo, y el sujeto siempre salía con los ojos cerrados.
Today we see some of these portraits as weird and scary, I remember when I was younger the first time I heard of this tradition was during the movie "The Others" (great movie by the way), and it was shown as a very dark thing. But after reading a little about it in Monsiváis' book "Quietecito por favor" (be still please), I see it in whole new light. He quotes John Keats in reference to post mortem portaiture: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever", and the goal of these photographs was presenting their loved ones in a beautiful way.
Hoy vemos estos retratos como algo extraño y de miedo, yo recuerdo que cuando era más joven, la primera vez que escuché de ésta tradición fue durante la pelicula "The Others" (Los Otros), (buenísima por cierto), y era mostrado como un recurso muy oscuro. Pero después de leer un poco en el libro de Monsiváis "Quietecito por favor", lo veo de manera distinta. Él cita a John Keats haciendo referencia al retrato post mortem: "Algo hermoso es una alegría eterna", y la meta de estas fotografías es presentar a los seres queridos de manera hermosa.
