Semana del terror - Día uno: Las pinturas de Aleksandra Waliszewska. 

Quiero empezar la semana del terror, por supuesto, con algo terrorífico.  Pensé que quería escribir sobre algún artista e inmediatamente pensé en la pintura de Aleksandra Waliszewska. 

Esta mujer es una artista polaca que hace unas pinturas un tanto perturbadoras, en mi opinión, una es más horrible que la otra. Son imágenes de una sencillez estremecedora, que nos podrían remitir a nuestras más funestas pesadillas, inquietantes y muchas de ellas con una presencia felina que me parece encantadora. Tal vez no son pinturas para todos, pero a mi me han atrapado y me parecen terriblemente hermosas.

I want to start the week of terror, of course, with something terrifying. I just wanted to write about an artist and I immediately thought of Aleksandra Waliszewska paintings.
This woman is a Polish artist that paints these disturbing images, in my opinion, one more horrible than the other. They are images of a frightening simplicity, that may remind us of our most dire nightmares. Many of them with a feline presence that I find quite charming.
Perhaps they are not paintings for everyone, but they've captivated me and I find them terrifyingly beautiful.

Last week, one of the guys that I work with (in the shop) asked me if I could make a drawing on a book with drawings an illustrations by a few artists an illustrators (all from cuernavaca and df I guessed) so I agreed. And when I was about to start drawing I realized that I haven't drawn for almost 6 months or so. O_o And then I remembered how much I enjoy drawing hair, and drawing in general, just for fun, without having to explain myself to noone(:

El otro día uno de los chicos con los que trabajo, me pidio que interviniera un libro en donde varias personas han dibujado también. Le dije que si, y cuando me disponía a empezar me di cuenta de que no había dibujado en casi 6 meses... ( tal vez más). Recordé cuanto disfruto dibujar cabello y dibujar en general, sólo por diversión y sin tener que justificar lo que hago con nadie(:

So I thought I could shared my drawing and a little part of my process(;
I encourage you to rediscover those things that inspire you, but that for some reason you stopped doing them.

Así que pensé que podría compartirles mi dibujo y un poco de mi proceso(;

Y los invito a que redescubran alguna cosa que los inspire, que disfrutaban hacer pero que por alguna razón dejaron de hacer. Los hará felices recordar(:

I spend a lot of time browsing through the internet, mostly jumping around from blog to blog, reading online magazines and the checking out the occasional web store, and I also spend a lot of time on youtube, I'm pretty addicted to the youtube channels I follow, I must say. And when you find a gem during those times, you mustn't let it slip away. What I'm trying to say is, that I have a terrible memory and if I don't save a page immediately in my favorites, I can spend several days trying to remember the name and browsing though inexact time frames in my browser history. Thus was the case with the Carson Elis:
Paso mucho tiempo viendo cosas en internet, de blog en blog, viendo revistas en linea, algunas tiendas y sobre todo paso mucho tiempo en youtube; soy un poco adicta a los canales que sigo, debo confesar. Y cuando encuentras alguna joya en alguno de esos lugares, no debes dejarla ir. Lo que intento decir es que tengo pésima memoria y si no guardo una página inmediatamente en mis favoritas, puedo pasar días buscandola en mi historial sin acordarme exactamente cuando lo vi. Ese fue el caso de Carson Ellis.  

Carson Ellis is a wonderful illustrator and I first found her book illustrations for the Wildwood series in an illustration blog, and after that, I completely forgot her name AND the word Wildwood. I looked in past posts from my favorite illustration blogs and typed in awkward searches of the likes of "wildlife" "wild forest" and such. Until finally I found another one of her illustrations on Pinterest and followed the link road back to her page :D

I will not go into her full biography except to say that she is Canadian, has a cat named Window (how cool is that name?), does the artwork for many albums including the Decemberists' (!!) and that she is super nice and replied to a tweet of mine where I confessed my admiration for her; you can read her complete biography (although you probably won't find that last fact in there :p), see her complete portfolio and read her blog here: Carson Ellis

Carson Ellis es una ilustradora, y la primera vez que la descubrí fue porque vi una de sus ilustraciones para los libros Wildwood, creo que lo vi en un blog de ilustración, pero después de eso se me olvidó como se llamaba Y se me olvido cómo se llamaban los libros.  Busqué en los posts viejos de mis blogs de ilustración favoritos e intenté buscar lo que medio recordaba y finalmente encontré otra de sus ilustraciones en Pinterest y siguiendo el link llegué a su blog :D

No voy a entrar en detalles acerca de su biografía, sólo voy a mencionar que es canadiense, tiene un gato que se llama Window (me encantá ese nombre), hace ilustraciones para muchas portadas de discos, incluyendo las de The Decemberists (¡!) y que es muy linda y amable porque me contesto un tweet en el que le confesé que la admiraba mucho. I realize now that the images I chose are pretty much from the same color family, but if you liked them I strongly recommend you check out her page, you can find a lot more in there.

Mary Blair

1911-1978

 

The first time I saw an illustration by Mary Blair was on a pamphlet that I got when I was in Tokyo. I bought a watercolor supplies and didn't realize, until I was back in México, that the salesperson tucked the pamphlet inside. On the pamphlet was an announcement for a museum exhibition showcasing the work of Mary Blair, and it showed a photograph of one of her Alice in Wonderland illustrations. I thought it was beautiful and the colors were great, my mom thought it looked familiar, and that she'd seen ads with similar drawings back when she was a little girl. 

La primera vez que vi una ilustración de Mary Blair fue en un panfleto que me dieron en Tokio. Compre un cuaderno para acuarela  y no me di cuenta hasta que ya estaba en México y lo abrí que habían metido un panfleto adentro y tenía el anuncio de una exposición con ilustraciones de Mary Blair, la que se veía ahi era una de su serie de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas. Me gustó mucho, se me hizo preciosa y me encantaron los colores. Cuando mi mamá la vio dijo que le recordaba a unos anuncios que vio cuando era niña con ilustraciones parecidas.

¡Ella es la de la foto! Enseñandole modestamente su trabajo a un par de monjas ;p 

She worked for Disney for many years, and she did a lot of commercial ads later on. She began making 'conceptual art' for the films Disney was working on, Dumbo and The Lady and the Tramp. After that she did the color styling for Cinderella, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (some of the greatest looking animation films ever if you ask me!). Along with them illustration books were released, featuring her conceptual art (I would love to own some of those!)

Trabajó para Disney por muchos años y después hizo muchas ilustraciones para anuncios. Empezó haciendo "arte conceptual" para las películas en las que trabajaba Disney en ese momento, Dumbo y La Dama y el Vagabudo.  Después hizo el estilo del color para Cenicienta, Peter Pan y Alicia en el País de las Maravillas (que son unas de las películas más bonitas en la historia de la animación, ¡en mi opinión!). Al mismo tiempo publicaron unos libros con sus ilustraciones que contenían todo su arte conceptual (¡me encantaría tener uno!).

 After seeing her work I've read a little about her - she was good friends with Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian -, and she took some trips with them all through South America and helped with The Three Caballeros and created a lot of the art from the 'It's a small world after all' ride in Disneyland'. 

Después de ver su trabajo leí un poquito de su vida, era buena amiga de Walt Disney y de su esposa, Lilian, y viajó con ellos y los ayudó a crear Los Tres Caballeros y también hizo mucho del arte para "It's a small world after all", el paseo de disneylandia (no se si se dice paseo ahora que lo pienso...). 

What I love the most about her work is her use of color, but I also find her composition really appealing because everything looks like its got movement... I don't know how to explain it, but it, but for me it has got a lot to do with the fact that she doesn't outline most of her drawings and she does a fantastic work with curves, everything is very curvy and flowy, I just love it.

Lo que más me gusta de su trabajo es como usa el color, pero también me llama mucho la atención como compone sus ilustraciones, siento que todo se ve como si tuviera movimiento... no se explicar exactamente a que me refiero, pero creo que tiene que ver con que no delinea la mayoria de sus elementos en el dibujo y que usa muchas curvas, y las usa muy bien; todo se ve muy curveado y como si fluyera, pues me gusta mucho, basicamente jaja.

It makes me really uncomfortable to pose for photos, but Sandra is really great as a photographer and she knows how to direct you when you're posing, and that's something I really need not to feel so awkward...I specially enjoy this photoshoot, it was so fun and everything went well that day(:

Me pone muy incomoda posar para fotos. Pero Sandra es muy buena fotografa y sabe como dirigirte cuando estas posando, y eso es algo que verdad necesito para no sentirme tan rara...Disfruté especialmente esta sesión de fotos en mi techo, fue muy divertida y todo salió bien ese día(:

I really enjoy making tutorials, is one of the reasons I started reading blogs and one of the reasons why I wanted to have a blog. I love how this zipper brooch turned out <3

One of my dreams is to be able to make my own cloth. Now that I finally have the time to try making something, my sewing machine is broken T_T But I like this post because ir reminds me that if I want to, I can turned my old pajamas into a shirt in 15 minutes in the middle of the night:p

One of my favorite ideas when we started the blog, was to have one day a week dedicated to art. I don´t no why we stop making Art Saturday posts but I know it´s something that I want to start doing again. I really like Natalia's work, and I really enjoy writting this little post about her work.

DIY: Lace Ring

I love all our DIY posts, mainly because most of them are done by Carmila, and I'm amazed at all the crafts she makes and I can't do most of them by myself. This one is one of my very favorites so simple and pretty.

Me encantan todos nuestros tutoriales, principalmente porque casi todos los hace Carmila,y me impresiona todas las cosas hechas a mano que hace y no podría hacer la mayoria yo. Este tutorial es uno de mis favoritos, muy simple y bonito <3

 DIY Four-strand braid and ways to use it

 I had no idea how to make this beautiful braid before and it looks super cute on anything. And I also liked seeing the pictures beacuse Carmila has long hair and makes me feel how time has passed ha!

No tenia idea de como hacer esta hermosa trenza y se ve súper linda en todo. Y además me gustó ver las fotos porque Carmila tenía el cabello largo y me hace sentir como ha pasado el tiempo, ja :p

 I often think we don't do justice to our section 'Art Saturday' but I definitely like this post. Mostly because I enjoyed writing it so much, reading in again made me smile. 

Muchas veces pienso que no le hacemos justicia a nuestra sección de Art Sarturday, pero definitivamente me gusta este post. En gran parte porque disfruté mucho escribiendolo, leerlo otra vez me hizo sonreir(:

Photography picks: Shadow

 Photography posts are the highlight of blog-reading for me, and not just our photography posts, but photo posts by blogs I follow as well. From pictures taken by the bloggers to good selections chosen while browsing around I love them. Carmila always makes great choices, and her selection of pictures on this particular post is one of my faves (just look at the photo above!!)

Los posts de fotografía son los que más destacan para mi cuando leo posts. Desde fotos tomadas por los bloggers hasta  buenas selecciones de fotos encontradas, me encantan. Carmila siempre hace buenas elecciones y su selección de fotografías en este post en particular es una de mis favoritas. (simplemente vean la foto de arriba;)

Cats: Comfortable Sleeping

And finally! A cat post of course... haha. This one has pictures of my cats and the weird positions they sleep in, in the picture above you can see Malkovich smiling out in the garden :3 

Y finalmente un post de gatos por supuesto...jaja. Este tiene fotos de mis gatos y sus extrañas posiciones cuando duermen. En la foto de arriba pueden ver a Malkovich sonriendo afuera en el jardín :3
