Mary Blair
1911-1978
The first time I saw an illustration by
Mary Blair was on a pamphlet that I got when I was in Tokyo. I bought a
watercolor supplies and didn't realize, until I was back in México, that
the salesperson tucked the pamphlet inside. On the pamphlet was an
announcement for a museum exhibition showcasing the work of Mary Blair,
and it showed a photograph of one of her Alice in Wonderland
illustrations. I thought it was beautiful and the colors were great, my
mom thought it looked familiar, and that she'd seen ads with similar
drawings back when she was a little girl.
La primera vez que vi una ilustración de Mary Blair fue en un panfleto que me dieron en Tokio. Compre un cuaderno para acuarela y no me di cuenta hasta que ya estaba en México y lo abrí que habían metido un panfleto adentro y tenía el anuncio de una exposición con ilustraciones de Mary Blair, la que se veía ahi era una de su serie de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas. Me gustó mucho, se me hizo preciosa y me encantaron los colores. Cuando mi mamá la vio dijo que le recordaba a unos anuncios que vio cuando era niña con ilustraciones parecidas.

She worked for Disney for many
years, and she did a lot of commercial ads later on. She began making 'conceptual art' for the films Disney was working
on, Dumbo and The Lady and the Tramp. After that she did the color
styling for Cinderella, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (some of the
greatest looking animation films ever if you ask me!). Along with them
illustration books were released, featuring her conceptual art (I would
love to own some of those!)
Trabajó para Disney por muchos años y después hizo muchas ilustraciones para anuncios. Empezó haciendo "arte conceptual" para las películas en las que trabajaba Disney en ese momento, Dumbo y La Dama y el Vagabudo. Después hizo el estilo del color para Cenicienta, Peter Pan y Alicia en el País de las Maravillas (que son unas de las películas más bonitas en la historia de la animación, ¡en mi opinión!). Al mismo tiempo publicaron unos libros con sus ilustraciones que contenían todo su arte conceptual (¡me encantaría tener uno!).
After seeing her work I've read a little about her - she was good
friends with Walt Disney and his wife, Lillian -, and she took some trips
with them all through South America and helped with The Three
Caballeros and created a lot of the art from the 'It's a small world
after all' ride in Disneyland'.
Después de ver su trabajo leí un poquito de su vida, era buena amiga de
Walt Disney y de su esposa, Lilian, y viajó con ellos y los ayudó a
crear Los Tres Caballeros y también hizo mucho del arte para "It's a
small world after all", el paseo de disneylandia (no se si se dice paseo
ahora que lo pienso...).
What I love the most about her work is her use of color, but I also find her composition really appealing because everything looks like its got movement... I don't know how to explain it, but it, but for me it has got a lot to do with the fact that she doesn't outline most of her drawings and she does a fantastic work with curves, everything is very curvy and flowy, I just love it.
Lo que más me gusta de su trabajo es como usa el color, pero también me llama mucho la atención como compone sus ilustraciones, siento que todo se ve como si tuviera movimiento... no se explicar exactamente a que me refiero, pero creo que tiene que ver con que no delinea la mayoria de sus elementos en el dibujo y que usa muchas curvas, y las usa muy bien; todo se ve muy curveado y como si fluyera, pues me gusta mucho, basicamente jaja.
