Ofrenda del día de muertos

The Day of the Dead is just around the corner and it's time to start planning our altars (:

If you're Mexican this will be a post with no surprises, but for all you that don't live here we wanted you to take a glimpse to our yearly tradition to honor the dead!

El día de muertos está apunto de llegar y es hora de empezar a planear nuestros altares (:

Si eres mexicano éste post no tendra nada nuevo pero para todos los que no viven aquí, queríamos mostrarles un vistazo a nuestra tradición anual de honrar a los muertos!

The altar, an offer to the dead: The first and second of November are national holidays and personally I think they are the coolest holidays along with the Día de Reyes (: The holiday has a pre-hispanic origin, but nowadays it coincides with the catholic holidays of All Saints Day and the All Souls Day, the first one being the day in which you honor the men and women that have passed away and the second one is to honor the babies and kids that have passed. 

It is customary to go to the grave of a family member and decorate it for the occasion, and also put up an altar in your house, here is how to do one:

Las ofrendas de día de muertos tienen lugar el primero y segundo de noviembre, son fechas feriadas y personalmente creo que son la mejores junto con el día de Reyes (: La celebración es de origen prehispanico sin embargo hoy en día coincide con las celebraciones católicas del día de Todos los Santos y el día de Los Fieles Difuntos, el primero es para honrar a todos los hombres y mujeres que han muerto, el segundo es para niños y bebes que han fallecido.

Es tradicional que la gente vaya a las tumbas de sus familiares y las decoren para la ocasión y también poner un altar en sus casa, aquí esta como hacer uno:

Let's begin: Take a table, cover it with a colorful tablecloth, then get something for the next 6 categories:

1. Chose a picture of someone who has died and you want to honor (it can be a family member, friend or  as we do in my house, pets and famous people we admire)

1. Escoge una foto de alguien que haya muerto a quien quieras honrar (puede ser un familiar, amigo, o como hacemos en mi casa mascotas y muertos célebres)

2.Cempazuchitl flowers

2. Flores de cempazuchitl

3. Cut-out paper 

3. Papel picado

4. Pan de Muerto

5.Candles 

5. Cirios

6. Something the dead used to like when he was living (I put my cat's favorite type of food in a bowl)

6. Algo que al muerto le gustara cuando estaba vivo (yo pongo las croquetas que más le gustaban a mi gata)

And that's it! I love how an altar brightens up a room, and I think it is a beautiful way of honoring the people we loved. Remember that it is not supposed to be solemn and dark, this holiday is about celebrating the people that meant something and welcoming them back with joy,  and let them have a taste of what they liked best  ;)

¡Y eso es todo! Me encanta como se ve un altar en una casa, creo que es una manera hermosa de honrar a la gente que hemos amado. Recuerden que no debe de ser algo sobrio y frío, ésta celebración se trata de recibir a la gente con alegría, que significó algo para nosotros y recibirlos con una probadita de lo que más les gustaba ;)
